Trade Secrets: Choosing Eyeshadow for Your Eye Color

When choosing an eyeshadow for your eye color, keep the color wheel in mind! Opposing colors will work amazingly together.

For example - Looking at the color wheel below, the colors you see directly across from blue is orange and browns. The color you see across from green is purples, ect.

Green Eyes:
Purple! Purple works beautifully with green eyes and will really make them pop! Earth tones, like mocha and espresso also work with green eyes to keep everything very neutral and pretty. Green eyeshadow with green eyes works, but if you're going for color, why not go with something that pops?!

TRY - MAC Parfait Amour, Star Violet, and Sketch, Urban Decay Psychedelic Sister

Blue Eyes:
NO BLUES. I think that the biggest "OH GOD, NO" mistake in the book of eyeshadows is matching blue eyeshadow with blue eyes. Bronzes, golds, and yellows look the best on you and really show off your naturally gorgeous eyes. Light pinks and chocolate browns also work amazingly with your eye color!

TRY - Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze,  MAC Bronze and Amber Lights, Urban Decay Baked and Half Baked

Grey Eyes:
I can't even describe this eyes color but it's so pretty and is commonly overlooked! Grey, silvers, and blacks do incredible things for grey eyes! The darkness of black and grey eyeshadows will make the whites of your eyes appear even brighter and larger, therefore making your eye color pop!

TRY - L'oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Flashback Silver, MAC Carbon, Maybelline Color Tattoo in Audacious Asphault

Brown Eyes:
Lucky us, almost any eyeshadow color goes! When choosing an eyeshadow to run with, take your skin tone into account! Greens add an extra pop, along with purples, and blue-violets. Greys and blacks will work, but beware of a heavy hand or else they will make your whole eye look too dark.

TRY - MAC Humid and Sumptuous Olive, or any of the eyeshadow shades mentioned throughout this post!

I didn't mention any specific brown eyeshadow shades because that's a whole different post in itself! Browns will work with any eye color, but you always have to take your skin tone into account when choosing which brown you want! In this post I've equipped you with the best eyeshadow colors (and even specific products) to accentuate your eye color and make it pop to full potential!

Now, go play with color and don't hold back anymore!

  1. Very helpful post Katie :) I always think back to art class when it comes to choosing colours for my makeup and clothes. I have green eyes so I rock purple and plum a lot. I've always been jealous of people with brown eyes as they look amazing in every colour.

  2. Great post. Nothing bothers me more than seeing a blue eyed girl wearing blue eye shadow because she thinks it makes her eyes pop more.

  6. This is so helpful! So I haven't been wrong that at wearing so much green :D My eyes are a weird thing, more like hazel I think. Sometimes they look super brown, but with some bright eyeshadow they become greenish.
